Random pieces of New Zealand facts and history....

Apparently the concept of Saturday shopping wasn't introduced in New Zealand until the 1970s - and this was only in the tourist spots. It wasn't until Nov. 15, 1980 that Saturday shopping for the whole nation was introduced.

New Zealand is the 3rd greatest meat-consuming nation in the world.

New Zealand has the 2nd most McDonald's per capita in the world.

One New Zealand adult eats and average of 27 liters of ice cream per year - the most of any country in the world.

New Zealand has 2 million cars for 4 million people.

But Kristi... there is late night shopping on Thurs nights, sometimes Friday nights!! so at least 1 night of the week the stores stay open past 6pm. you should have come 10 years ago; the grocery stores didn't open until 8:30am and closed at 5:30pm. i couldn't figure that one out. not sure about Tauranga, but Auckland now has a couple of 24 hour Foodtown's. (not anywhere close to me, but i have seen them) AND the Warehouse (NZ's version of WallyWorld) stays open until 8:30pm 7 days a week. what more do you want?

Hey, Terry just found in the newspaper that the post shop is now introducing zip codes for the first time in NZ!!! they just got numbers on the motorway exit signs. that really confused the people.
